Giovanna’s [not] Fine Jewelry

NEVER go to “Giovanna’s Fine Jewelry” store in Mountain View, CA (address 355 Castro Street, Suite 1, Mountain View, CA 94041)

I have had SUCH a bad experience there and wanted to share their unprofessionalism with you and the world. So hopefully when you search “Giovanna’s” on the web it will come up with my post.

The story:

I have an engagement ring that I wanted to get it redesigned. Giovanna’s is right around the corner from where I live and I thought I would go get an estimate on how much it would be.

I went in Thursday and told them what I wanted, and she wrote it down and took the sketch I had made of the ring. She estimated between $425 and $495, to use the platinum that I had and the diamonds that I have. She said they would need the ring to measure the diamonds on the computer, unless I could measure them at home. I have taken many jewelry classes, but have not yet gotten an pair of calipers. So I asked when she could have it done for, she said Saturday no problem, and I would get a call before then to tell me when it was done.

No call, I went in at half an hour before closing on Saturday. It was not there AND no estimate had been done. I spoke to Giovanna herself, she photocopied my work order and wrote down my phone number. She promised she would call me in the morning to tell me about it. I made her aware that I was moving the short turn around time needed. She said that if I wanted it designed I would have it done by this Wednesday.

Again no phone call, and they were closed on Monday. I left a message on Monday saying I did not want them to do anything, I just wanted my ring back and would go in on Tuesday between 1 and 2pm to pick it up.

I came in on Tuesday, again NO ring. Not only that but it took the sales assistant about 15 minutes to figure that out. Giovanna saw me come in the shop, avoided me and stayed in the back while her sales assistant told me the ring was still not there. I was still pleasant (too pleasant according to a friend I was with) and said I did not have time for this as I am moving abroad on Friday and wanted my ring back. She said no problem, Giovanna will pick it up for you tonight and you can come get it tomorrow.

So as planned I have came back and again they did not have it. AGAIN! This time I said it was unacceptable. She said Giovanna was not there and would be back in an hour. She tried to call her and told me she kept getting her voicemail. I told her the situation, and said I would be back and an hour and told her my ring better be there.

Two hours later and the ring was finally there. No Giovanna in sight. Still looks like my ring, and I hope they have done nothing to it.

Conclusion:
I was going to trust my valuable engagement ring to them to get re-designed and this is the kind of service I get for just an estimate? This is totally unacceptable to me. They have not done ANYTHING that they said they would, and I had to get “upset” (my version of upset is not most people’s, I was still pretty calm, just visibly annoyed) in order for her to really understand that I wanted my ring back and another day would not be okay. I am very nervous that I even trusted them to take it to do the estimate.

I will never go there again. I will recommend all my family, friends, and blogosphere to NOT be a patron and encourage your family and friends to do the same.

You were too nice when we went in together! I would’ve have liked to make a nasty scene…

Strange. Google seems to differentiate between a right single quotation mark and an apostrophe, so your post about “Giovanna’s Fine Jewelry” doesn’t appear when googled. That’s dumb. Anyhow, it has a much too high review on yelp — you should do something about that.

Thanks ElinaR. I just added my review to Yelp ;) I lowest you could click on was one star, and I included all the necessary comments. Oh well, hopefully others figure it out and add some negative reviews too.

let me share our experience with Giovanna and her staff.

my husband and I had a cross we wanted designed. it belong to my husband father. it was very important it be done and taken care of.
it was a one of a kind cross.

we had no problem in trusting Giovanna and her staff with the cross.
the moment we walked in the store we were agreed with open arms.

we are very pleased with the out come of the cross and very glad we went to Giovanna’s.

Giovanna gives you a feeling that anything can be done and is done.

understanding of other people work load is important.
in the time we were in the store we seen how busy everyone can get

let me say that, people should go by thier own experiences and not the experience of someone else.

i will be telling all my family and friend of GIOVANNA’S FINE JEWELERS

I am a big fan of designer jewelry and have been purchasing Giovanna’s jewelry for many years. She is one of the very best in the US and Europe I have come across. She tries very hard to meet her clients’ demands, but some of her clients are unreasonable.

Giving a jeweler only a few days to work on platinum is not only unrealistic but mean. Anyone who knows jewelry knows that platinum is difficult to work with — it takes time to source the material and also takes more time to get the work just right. It would be promoting slave labor if one demanded such work to be done in such a short time.

I guess there are people in this world who have tons of time on their hands such that they use their energy to ruin other people who lead honest and hard working lives. It’s a shame because Giovanna recently lost her spouse, and it’s not right picking on her at such a weak moment.

    Thank you for your comments.
That is great that there have been other experiences. However mine remains the same.

    Specifically in response to Goldie:
“Giving a jeweler only a few days to work on platinum is not only unrealistic but mean. Anyone who knows jewelry knows that platinum is difficult to work”
    - jewelers are professionals. I did not give them a couple of days to work on platinum, that is what they suggested. They are professionals and should know what their timelines are. They were unprofessional in how they handled my situation. I am quite aware of the time needed, they made it sound like they had many jewelers, and could get it done.

“not right picking on her at such a weak moment”
She runs a business. I am not aware of her personnal life, and when speaking to her on business do not want to be. If she was in a weak moment she should have taken time off work, or not committed to do something she was not able to.

I stand by my situation could have been handled with professionalism, and tact and it was not. The one item I did end up getting changed their was my wedding band and it is now ruined how they sized it. And if there are more positive experiences at Giovanna’s than negative, that is great for her and her business. I can only hope she will learn from her mistakes. I will not return to her however.

I’ve been a customer of Giovanna’s Fine Jewlery for many years. I’ve always recieved outstanding customer service and quality jewlery.
I recently purchased a beatiful ring any it is just beautiful. I would highly
recommend Giovanna’s Fine Jewery to my friends and family.

I have been purchasing my jewelry with Giovanna’s for years now and she has been nothing but wonderful. She does a great job and is always professional. She is very hands on and her knowledge of gems is amazing. I do not think one person’s opinion should influence anyone’s decision, go in and decide for you.

My only comment to Julie about her personal life and weak moment, have some compassion. Life is too short to waste negative energy. And your right, you do not have to return to her store. That is the beauty of it.

Thanks for your comment Tina – as mentioned previously:
“if there are more positive experiences at Giovanna’s than negative, that is great for her and her business.”

I am surprised however that this blog has become a top hit for her business, and no one from her store or herself has made a comment apologizing for my bad experience.

I love Giovanna’s. Before going to her shop, I was uncomfortable buying jewelry. Giovanna has a way of making people comfortable and makes the experience of buying jewelry FUN. We have had nothing but excellent service and appreciation being one of her customers. Anytime I need my ring cleaned = no problem, resized = no problem, polished = no problem. Everything has come back within a week.

Thanks again for your comments. I realized I had left an additional story out. Before I went to her about my engagement ring re-design I had a ring re-sized with her. I paid for the additional gold to be added to my ring. When I got the ring back they had not added any gold, they just put it in their stretcher and stretched it out. It is now thinner, and no longer has as much of a beveled edge it went in with.
With all these comments it is interesting that no one from her store has apologized or addressed me regarding my bad experiences. If I had been apologized to properly I would be able to update this post with positive actions from them and how they redeemed themselves. I am looking forward to be able to do that one day
Good to see she is learning from her mistakes and treats her other customers well. I hope more people have better experiences with her.

I had a really bad experience with Giovanna, she is the most unprofessional person to deal with, my fiance purchased a ring for me from Giovanna for about $1100. or $1200. for christmas 2006 and we had decided to exchange it and we both live out of state. We called her and Giovanna promised us that she would send a catalog by mail for us to exchange the ring for something else in January, we never got the catalog, so we called her back and she promised again that she would send it out in february, a month later still no catalog, so we called her and spoke with her and she said that she would just refund the ring back to us. We sent back the ring in march and we are still waiting for a refund. Everytime we call her she tells us that she she sent out a check, she has used that excuse 3 times already than she tells us she is having some financial issues and promised that she would send out the check that same day, we even verified the mailing address and we still have not recieved a refund from her. She does not return our calls, we call her about 2 or 3 times a week and she does not return our calls. My fiance is furious with her. I am ready to report her to the BBB and call a local news station. It looks like she is not learning from her mistakes.

I know personally that Giovanna is the most unorganized person I’ve met. She might lose or misplace your stuff and may take weeks to find it, or she may just send you home with an item that is similar to yours hoping you’d be none the wiser. She’s very close to closing her doors. I’m surprised she has survived thus far. It’s cute to see that a few people have had a positive experience, but if people new the truth, they’d never go back. She reuses other peoples old/unwanted jewelery and melts it down to make your so-called “brand new” wedding ring from someone that probably wore it and got a divorce and is now trying to get rid of the bad juju. She is barely staying afloat that if your in the market to finding a diamond she will go lower then everyone else just to pay the annoying debt collectors that call her night and day at the shop. She also reuses diamonds as well and never tells the buyer. She is decietful as well as a liar. She so called cleans your rings because she wants you to look at her ugly fake jewelery that she convinces you is real, while she frantically looks for your jewelery that she’s probably sold to another idiot customer. All you people that think she’s so great continue to go to her as she rips you off. It’s truelly funny to her the positive feedback about her and her shop, but she’s definitely conned you as well. I know this because I work for her!

My name is Jessica Cavin, I am currently the only person with the name Jessica that works for Giovannas fine jewelry, and I was the only person working here on Febuary 7, 2008 and unless you do not want this to become a legal matter for you I would promptly remove the last comment using the name Jessica. All of the statements made using my name are false, anyone who reads this should know this. We are going to be handling this legally. I do not appreciate being slandered, I can lose my job due to this. This has been a very painful experience for myself and the owner of the business.

Personally, I think the comment by “Jessica” to be most tacky and heavy handed. Let’s just threaten a lawsuit because we feel threatened, shall we? Salespeople give poor service and companies let down customers ALL THE TIME, and customers have the right to share their negative and positive experiences. Frankly, when I first read this post I was neutral, but after reading the whining and threats in the last post, I will now be avoiding the store at all costs. Congrats, you just lost another customer.

my string of pearls that was purchased when my 25 year old daughter was an infant to someday be her “something old”. I took it into Giovanna’s to be restrung. After 4 months of many excuses…I finally insisted on it’s return without being restrung…it was then that Giovanna told me that it was LOST!
she offered to replace it, and another 5 months later, and 7 phone calls that were not ever returned. I presented myself to the store, and it was 2 pearls short. She would not work with me! I am heart broken that I trusted her with something so precious. I should have not given her a second chance because 2 years ago I had similar problems when she worked on another antique item…my wedding present to my husband.. it was given back to me with a cracked crystal, and it has never kept good time since. She refused to replace crystal or recheck time keeping for free. she told me it would be $100 to reopen the watch.
I would NOT recommend Giovanna’s to anyone.

For starters, I will say that Giovanna can have some great stuff in her store. But I hightly doubt she has nice stuff now. I know that she has lost numerous accounts due to her lack of paying the bills…or should I just say avoiding paying her pills all together. 99% of her checks bounce and many accounts stopped doing business with her because of it, as they should have. Anyway, she does give great prices though, probably because she is soooo desperate to make a sale so she can pay her rent. But at the same time, tons of people are struggling and selling cheap just to make rent. So who can blame her right. And hey, if it gives you nice jewelry for cheap, why not!! Take advantage is what I say. Now for the other side, she is a BIG LIAR. She is AWFUL for getting repairs done. She does avoid calls all the time and has her associates lie to the costumers for her. She constantly tells clients that the jeweler has not finished the piece, when truthfully she has not even sent it in to get work done. Then she blames the jeweler if the piece looks sloppy, but she pays for sloppy work. She can’t afford a nice jeweler anymore. So here’s the point of all this blabber….if you want a killer deal on a diamond and don’t plan on doing repairs I reccommend her. But if you plan on taking anything valuable or sentimental in for “repair” or “upgrade” don’t do it!!

I am really surprised by the the above comments. My wife has gone to this shop several times and always has had a good experience. It is a really busy store and the staff does try there best to accommodate everyone. I have also gone to the store and found the most unique jewelry. Also, I have recommended several friends of mine who have gone to Giovanna’s and have always been very satisfied with the quality of the products. Certain Days they do get way too busy. Most likely due to the great deals, low prices and really good quality. I have also had my wedding ring redesigned by Giovanna’s and because I am a regular customer she cut me a reduced the price for me.

Who ever wrote this needs to get a grip! I mean seriously you are still complaining about this after how many years…if you had a bad experience that’s fine but that doesn’t mean everyone is uptight like you. Giovanna is very nice and she actually listens to what her customers want. Go get your jewelry from somewhere else if its bothering you, but don’t act like a 5 year old ranting the same thing again and again. Grow up and use your head!

I am so disappointed that this negative blog review appears as the first Google result for Giovanna’s. Giovanna’s is a beautiful jewelry store and Giovanna herself is one of the most wonderful salespeople I have ever met. My fiance and I went there for engagement rings and Giovanna spent time with us listening to exactly what we wanted and made us the perfect ring. She has a knack for understanding exactly what you are asking for, and will not try to oversell you or undersell you on jewelry that you don’t want. She even honored our request to use Canadian diamonds, rather than African diamonds, and showed us the shipment papers for proof. In the end the ring was exactly what we wanted, priced 100’s of dollars less than what we found online, and Giovanna invited us back for free regular cleaning and re-plating of the ring if it gets tarnished. We have bought several pieces of jewelry from her since and had similarly great experiences.

I know this sounds like an overly gushing review, but this is no exaggeration — Giovanna is really amazing. Check out this unique store and this wonderful salesperson – you will not be disappointed.

julessilver, your negative experience and review of Giovanna’s seems to be in the strong minority. I hope it gets demoted to a lower position on Google search someday.
