Julia. I don,t know how old this is but stumbled across it while searching for jewelers that wanted to work in northern calif. Let me know more about your experience and abilities as well as what living in mt. shasta would be like for you. You will definatly find the right position if you have that commitment. Hope that its working out but let me know. I am willing to help if it worked out for the best for both of us. Jon

Julia, Impressive - go for your dream! Like you said...you have to try! I found your blog while searching on jewelry technician programs. I'm not sure I want to go through the whole process at my age but maybe some of it... What a lucky thing it is for you to be able to live in SF and 'close' to the academy...a great opportunity! Best Wishes to you!

Being a son of a prominent jeweler in my home town, I naturally developped an appetite for the entire jewelry industry.

When I began to enquire about increasing my knowledge in the gemology field, I found that in Canada, the education levels offered were more than adequate.

However I decided on participating in the Gemmological Institute of America's (GIA) home study program and earned my degree as a Diamonds specialist.

The only one-on-one study time I could participate in involved travelling to great distances for 1-2 weeks at a time. A local jewelry appraiser / gemologist offered to tutor me as well. He happens to be a great friend of the family, so that helped.

It was hard work, but I managed to pull through. You will succeed, just follow the path.

The apprentice situation in North America is a difficult one. People still hire real craftspeople to come over from Europe, because it is hard to find people locally with training and expertise. This is in everything from carpentry to jewelry. Goes back to the education system.

It's unlikely to happen in the US, but it would be wonderful to have a properly funded and promoted craft system in Canada.
